CCSO: 5 charged with attempted murder after August 2023 assault

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Five people were arrested on Saturday and Sunday and charged with the attempted murder of a man last year.

According to a news release from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), a county grand jury returned indictments charging the following individuals in connection with an August 2023 assault:

  • Jerry A. Carden Jr., 33, of Elizabethton

    • Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault (weapon), tampering with evidence, filing a false report

  • Meesha Brieanne Williams, 32, of Elizabethton

    • Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, attempted second-degree
      murder, aggravated assault (weapon), tampering with evidence, filing a false report

  • Kelvin Lynn Bradley Jr., 24, of Elizabethton

    • Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder,
      aggravated assault (weapon)

  • Daniel A. Shearl, 19, of Elizabethton

    • Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder,
      aggravated assault (weapon)

  • Jeffery Scott Brooks Jr., 21, of Johnson City

    • Conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder,
      aggravated assault (weapon)

On Aug. 19, 2023, the CCSO reported an investigation began after deputies responded to the Stoney Creek community regarding an assault.

When they arrived, deputies found a 29-year-old man who was being treated by EMS for an apparent head injury. According to deputies, the man was unable to speak and was taken to an area hospital for treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

The victim’s family reportedly told police they received a call from the victim who sounded like he was in distress. The man asked his family to come help him at the boat ramp on Wilbur Dam Road, the release stated.

Family members then found the victim and drove him to the Carter County EMS station to receive care, the CCSO reported.

The victim’s mother told police the man had been attacked by several individuals, stating they used a baseball bat, brass knuckles and a cast iron skillet to assault him. Family members told police the names of the individuals the victim identified as the people who attacked him.

The victim’s vehicle, a puddle of blood and a broken cast iron skillet were reportedly found at the boat ramp.

Deputies were informed by medical staff at the Johnson City Medical Center that the victim had a skull fracture, the release stated.

On May 8, 2024, the investigation into the assault continued and the Carter County Criminal Court issued indictments against Carden, Williams, Bradley, Shearl and Brooks in connection with the assault.

Carden and Williams were arrested on May 11, and Bradley, Shearl and Brooks were arrested on May 12.

According to the sheriff’s office, Carden, Williams, Bradley, and Brooks were all released after posting a $25,000 bond each.

As of Monday, Shearl remains at the Carter County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.
