CCSD Trustees narrow down finalists on search firms for new superintendent

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – One step closer to finding a new superintendent, the Clark County School Board of Trustees is moving forward in hiring a search firm to hopefully have a new district leader in place by the fall.

Trustees picked their top three search firms during a special board meeting on Wednesday: Alma Advisory Group; Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, and McPherson and Jacobson, LLC.

But what about the cost to taxpayers?

“Are we able to know what the range in prices was? I see the ratings for that, but do we have a range in these prices, how much they vary?” CCSD Trustee Lola Brooks asked.

“At this time, we typically don’t share costs until the evaluation is complete,” Kristin Blake, the director of purchasing for CCSD, said.

The district has previously worked with McPherson and Jacobson in 2009. They helped hire Dr. Dwight Jones who abruptly resigned in 2013.

“I think CCSD is better than I found it two years ago,” Jones said.

CCSD had then paid that firm $60,000.

Both trustees Katie Williams and Lisa Guzman didn’t participate in Wednesday’s special meeting.

“They had emergencies, so they weren’t able to make it to today’s meeting,” CCSD Board President Evelyn Garcia Morales said in response to a question from CCSD Trustee Linda Cavazos.

“Well, I actually know that two of them are out of town. I’m not sure about the third one,” Cavazos said.

8 News Now previously reported that Williams may actually not be living in Clark County.

Where is Clark County School District Trustee Katie Williams?

John Vellardita, the executive director of the Clark County Education Association, told 8 News Now on Tuesday that Williams’ votes should be vacated if, in fact, she has moved.

“We would call upon the president of the board [Evelyn] Garcia Morales to look into this matter,” Vellardita said.

“How confident are you that she would even investigate this?” 8 News Now Education Reporter Joshua Peguero asked.

John responded, “Well, I’m not confident at all.”

Williams has told 8 News Now she doesn’t plan to run for re-election this year.

The board of trustees will have a special meeting on May 29 to interview the three search firms.
