CCSD implements cellphone signal-blocking pouches for 6 to 12 graders

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Clark County School District leaders are rolling out new safety measures next year, including requiring students in sixth through twelfth grades to wear an ID badge.

Classroom phone pouch to be required for students at select CCSD schools

Those initiatives were discussed Tuesday at a summer break and school safety news conference.

CCSD is also planning to introduce cellphone signal-blocking pouches.

Middle and high school students will be required to place their phones inside the pouches.

“So students will have access to their phones during a crisis situation but the focus will be that they won’t have access to them while they’re learning. Our focus is on learning,” CCSD Interim Superintendent Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell said.

School police also discussed the number of guns seized on campus Tuesday.

District data showed officers seized a total of 46 guns and that includes both on and off-campus.

The agency credits the use of K9s which can detect firearms for the confiscations.

CCSDPD Chief Mike Blackeye said canines have done 1,800 sniffs so far this school year.
