Columbia Basin College’s dream of winning the Northwest Athletic Conference championship on its own floor died Thursday when the Hawks men could not overcome Portland Community College.
Despite sophomore Ta’Veus Randle’s 35 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals, CBC fell short against Portland, losing 86-82 in the men’s quarterfinals.
Chiawana graduate Jayden Martinez added 17 points and 6 rebounds for CBC, which finishes the season with a 20-9 record.
“One thing we talked about before the game was being very disciplined,” said CBC coach Anthony Owens. “We just gave them a lot of baskets at the rim.”
Owens said he loved coaching this group of guys.
“These guys have done a great job of leaving it all out on the floor,” he said. “It’s been a joy to coach these guys.”
There are two more men’s quarterfinal games today at CBC, but all four East Region teams have now been eliminated from the tournament.
Now it’s time for the women to take the stage, with four first-round games scheduled today — including Walla Walla Community College (20-7) taking on Clackamas (21-6) at 6 p.m.
The CBC women, who finished first in the East Region and are the top team in the final NWAC coaches poll, will make their tournament debut at 12 p.m. Saturday against Portland (22-6).
The Hawks have a 23-2 record.

River View head coach Kris Welch will be an East assistant coach.
The game features seniors from the state’s smaller classifications of 2A, 1A, 2B and 1B.
The game will take place on June 22 at East Valley High School in Yakima.
College signing
Richland senior Jenna Holm knows where she’ll be playing volleyball this coming fall: Northwest Nazarene University. Holm, who was a first-team Mid-Columbia Conference outside hitter this past fall, signed a letter of intent to play for the Idaho school.
College update
Former CBC star Brooks Rasmussen has been playing centerfield and leading off for the Metro State University-Denver baseball team this spring.
The team is 5-6, and junior Rasmussen is batting .237 (9 for 38).
Hydroplanes
Before we know it, it’ll be spring, then summer. And that’ll mean unlimited hydroplanes running around on the Columbia River in late July.
The new organization leading the boat fleet, Hydrotown Group, has listed the Columbia Cup on July 26-28. Spring Training — a chance for boats to works the kinks out before the season starts — will also be in the Tri-Cities on May 31.
The season opens June 29-30 in Guntersville, Ala.; followed by the annual race in Madison, Ind., on July 5-7.
After the Tri-Cities race, the fleet moves to Seattle for the Seafair Cup on Aug. 2-4.
Two races have been added to the schedule, although they are both listed currently as tentative: Detroit with the APBA Gold Cup on Aug. 23-25; and San Diego Bayfair on Sept. 13-15.
