Cause of Death Revealed for Woman Whose Final Moments Were Revealed When She Called 911 Saying Ex Was Chasing Her

Authorities announced last week that the remains of Jamilla Smith, 30, had been found. She was reported missing in December 2023

The cause of death of a South Carolina mother who was found dead after calling 911 claiming her ex was chasing her has been revealed.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl M. Ables confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday, May 15, that Jamilla Smith died of gunshot wounds to the head.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday, May 10, that the remains of Smith, 30, were found after a months-long investigation, according to WLTX. Prior to the discovery, three people, including Smith’s ex-boyfriend Daniel G. Harmon, 34, were arrested and charged in connection with the case.

The mother of two was first reported missing by family on Dec. 2, 2023, along with Harmon, who faces charges of murder and kidnapping, USA Today reports, citing authorities. It's not immediately clear if Harmon has entered a plea or retained an attorney.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement at the time that “both have a history of domestic violence incidents.”

An arrest affidavit for Harmon obtained by WACH, WLTX and the Augusta Press states that Smith called emergency services on Dec. 2, 2023, saying that her ex — later identified as Harmon — had broken into her house and was chasing her.

The dispatcher reported that Smith sounded short of breath, and a car engine could be heard revving in the background, according to WACH and WLTX.

“Jamilla is heard screaming and the phone appears to drop,” the affidavit continues, per the Augusta Press. A male voice could then be heard telling Smith to get in the car so he could take her to the emergency room, the affidavit alleges.

“Jamilla continues to scream and can be heard yelling no, don’t touch me, don’t hurt me please, and you hit me,” the affidavit states.

The 911 call and evidence including blood allegedly found in the trunk of the Harmon’s 2023 black Dodge Charger led to the murder and kidnapping charges, per WACH.

On April 19, a second person was charged in connection with the case. Bryan Alexander Hampton Jr., 35, turned himself in to authorities that day and was charged with accessory after the fact of murder, WLTX reports, citing authorities.

Authorities allege in an arrest affidavit that Hampton helped Harmon dispose of Smith’s remains, according to FOX 28.

Soon after, the sheriff’s office announced that a third man, 46-year-old Clyde James Hendley II, had been arrested on charges of accessory after the fact to murder, according to WLTX.

It’s unclear if Hampton and Hendley had entered pleas or retained attorneys to speak on their behalf.
