Cattails Supper Club in Winnebago County serves corned beef all year long

WINCHESTER, Wis. (WFRV) – The supper club has returned to Brecklin Loop in the Town of Winchester.

The spot that locals might know as the “Viking Supper Club” is now reimagined as “Cattails.”

Julie’s Cafe along Velp Avenue will start supper club on March 8

This traditional supper club is open only in the evenings, Wednesday through Sunday. The expansive bar is rivaled only by the salad bar.

“The salad bar was a must,” explained owner Cathy Davey, who runs the supper club along with her husband Nick Kane. “There’s not much missing off of there, including the cheese and crackers liver and paté. The one thing we do differently on Friday and Saturday nights is we do a potato bar.”

Davey has always side-hustled as a bartender while working from home for Cisco computer systems.

“I’m a people person,” she explained.

When her husband wanted to break away from his construction business and the old supper they used to visit went up for sale, they jumped and got right to work.

“We added a little color to it, painted the trim painted the ceilings,” explained Kane.

Davey also retrieved photos from the Winchester Historical Society. “They’re all from Larsen Winchester and Zittau. I combed through hundreds to pick the neatest. We have had people come in and say that’s my grandma’s house.”

If you’re looking for a real pop of color then peak into the kitchen.

Head Chef Jonathan Ramirez brings years of experience in the Fox Valley, but never in a supper club until now.

“The owners allow me to try new things. For me to have that free reign to create has been awesome.”

There are some eye-popping choices on the menu, including ahi tuna and salmon, spicy fried green beans, and, would you believe, corned beef and cabbage year-round.

Cathy says since they offer a Reuben with their sandwich and burger menu, it’s an option they feel sets them apart. Be sure to check their Facebook page daily to see what’s available and when.

The Altona Supper Club also does lunch and a Sunday brunch

“We always have sandwiches and burgers because not everyone wants a full meal. If you go out with kids, they might not want fish or a big steak. It’s all about comfort food.”

Comfort food and community.

“You’ll see people at the bar naturally talk to strangers,” said Davey. “It happens every other night. You’ll see people make new friends.

If you do spend some time at the bar and hear the big bell ring that means somebody’s buying a round.

Alexander’s brings a dash of daring to the supper club experience

While they pride themselves on their old-fashioned cocktails and ice cream drinks, Cattails also ensures that beer drinkers have some options.

“One of our beers on tap is brewed by the Stevens Point Brewery,” Kane explained. “It’s one we have our name on; Cattails Amber and my favorite is the Point Special.

“Seeing that it’s open again just made me feel good,” Steve Malliet of New London told Local 5 News. “There’s a revitalization of supper clubs in the area, and everybody is enjoying coming out.”

“We’ve been losing too many in all the local neighborhoods,” added Ken Leher, who was visiting Cattails with his wife Sandra for the first time. “It’s nice to have one come back without a doubt.”
