Cat cops and Godzilla: Utah joins in on April Fool’s Day fun

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It’s April Fool’s Day, so get ready for laughter and pranks. This year, some Utah pages — from the Salt Lake City International Airport to Arches National Park — joined in on the fun with a few jokes of their own.

In an online post, the Salt Lake City International Airport posted a picture of the upcoming River Tunnel art Installation filled with an actual river, complete with a fisherman and the famous 9th and 9th Whale swimming through. They wrote that they plan to make the art piece “more authentic by filling the tunnel with water to provide transportation between concourses A and B”.

They added that moving walkways will be replaced by Disney-esque boats, and paddles and inflatable life vests will be provided for passengers. Not only that, but the post said there will be music playing overhead to match the theme, including “Cry Me a River,” “River of Dreams” and “Moon River.” The post ends with #AprilFools for the holiday.

The jokester post was met with plenty of reactions, including a comment that suggested adding “Baby Shark” to the playlist and another saying given the long walk at the airport, they wish it was true.

Although an actual river is not planned for the airport, the River Tunnel Art is not a joke. The installation is expected to open to the public on Oct. 22 this year.

Arches National Park is also joining in on the prankster fun. On social media, they wrote
“We have welcomed a new arch to our collection of over 2,000 arches- the National Park Service’s largest arch!”

This new arch, they posted, is the Gateway Arch, referring to the iconic monument in St. Louis, Missouri. They wrote that it will surpass the Landscape Arch which is 306 ft wide and Double Arch which is 112 ft tall.

Gateway Arch, the post said, will now take the crown for the longest and tallest arch at the park at 630 ft wide and tall. Not only this, but it will be taking its space above another famous arch, the Delicate Arch, including a picture that perfectly demonstrates this.

“We are excited to join forces with Gateway Arch National Park,” the post said.

Afterward, they ended it by writing, “In other news … today is April Fool’s Day.”

In perfect timing with the new “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” movie, the Bureau of Land Management in Utah shared some alarming news — a giant radiated lizard was sighted at Utah’s Temple Mountain, with a picture to go alongside the joke.

“Reports on April 1, 2024, describe a giant radiated lizard emerged from old uranium mines. This April Fools’, remember Temple Mountain’s real legacy: uranium mining history and breathtaking views,” the post said, ending with #AprilFools.

The Springville Police Department was kitten around with a post depicting two new recruits — saying that their K9 program has been doing exceptionally well, and after much discussion, they’re starting the state’s first-ever feline program.

The two recruits are named Neville Furbottom and Professor Rum Tum Tugger the third. Neville Furbottom, they wrote, joins the department from Switzerland and has been assigned as a narcotics and apprehension feline, with Corporal Johnson set to be his handler.

Springville police said that Professor Rum Tum Tugger, who is depicted as being quite buff, was “recently released from a lengthy prison sentence, and has been assigned to our new gang unit.” Detective Wilding has been set to be his handler, and they’re excited to see what the two can achieve together.

The status ends with “Please welcome these two new recruits with open yarns *cough* I mean arms. Bad boys beware!” and #HappyApril.

The post was met with many laugh reactions, including some commentators wondering if their cats can also join the new squad.
