Considering he's one of the most acclaimed auteurs in Hollywood and has only made eight films, it's always a big deal when Quentin Tarantino has a new movie. But Tarantino's next movie has been surrounded by intrigue since before he even finished the script-and not all of it good. Early in the process, Tarantino was forced to switch production companies after the disgrace of his longtime collaborator Harvey Weinstein. Then, Tarantino himself came under fire for his behaviour toward Uma Thurman on the set of Kill Bill.

The film is moving forward, though, and even with the drama off set, the details seem pretty promising for Tarantino's ninth movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Who is in it?

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio will play aging Hollywood western stars. DiCaprio will play "Rick Dalton, former star of a western TV series, while Pitt will be his longtime stunt double, Cliff Booth."

"Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate," Tarantino said in a statement. "I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A., and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff."

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood boasts an impressive ensemble cast of A-listers, including Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Emile Hirsch, Burt Reynolds, Timothy Olyphant, Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth.

DiCaprio shared a first look from the film's set in an Instagram post that features the actor and his co-star Pitt in '60s-era looks:

What's it about?

While it was originally rumored to be about the murder of Sharon Tate and others, all orchestrated by Charles Manson, Tarantino has since confirmed that the events of the movie simply take place around that gruesome event:

Set in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, Tarantino’s upcoming movie, according to a source who read the script, focuses on a male TV actor who’s had one hit series and his looking for a way to get into the film business. His sidekick-who’s also his stunt double-is looking for the same thing. The horrific murder of Sharon Tate and four of her friends by Charles Manson’s cult of followers serves as a backdrop to the main story.

When should it be out and who is making it?

The film will be produced by Sony after Tarantino parted ways with his longtime collaborator, the disgraced Harvey Weinstein. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will hit cinemas 9 August, 2019.
