In case you missed it: Ash-covered Guatemala reels after deadly volcano eruptions; Fires char southwestern US

A devastating volcano erupted in Guatemala this week, killing at least 99 people.

The Volcan de Fuego erupted on Sunday, dispersing ash across the region and blasting nearby towns with pyrocrastic flows.

Ash piled as high as the roofs of some houses in the small town of San Miguel Los Lotes, Reuters reported. Rescue workers were forced to halt efforts on Tuesday due to extremely dangerous conditions.

Recent smaller eruptions, lava flows and daily rain have made search efforts extremely difficult. The ground was so hot in some areas that rescuers' boots melted when trying to navigate through the debris, according to the AP.

This is the second time El Volcan de Fuego has erupted this year. It translates to "Volcano of Fire" and is known as one of the most active in Central America.

Hawaii continues to deal with aftermath from the Kīlauea Volcano, as a fast-moving lava flow recently caused an entire lake to evaporate.

Lava flowed toward Green Lake over the weekend, eventually filling the basin and causing the lake to dry out. Land and homes between Green Lake and Kapoho Bay were also destroyed.

The ongoing eruption also triggered moderate earthquakes near Halemaumau, but the quakes were not strong enough to prompt a tsunami threat.

In northern New Mexico, the Ute Fire has raged across the region for a week, charring more than 36,000 acres of land.

Previous evacuation orders for Cimarron, New Mexico, were lifted this week, but air and water quality could be compromised. The Cimarroncito Reservoir and surrounding water shed sustained fire damage, officials said.

No residences were lost due to the fire; however, 14 outbuildings were destroyed on Philmont Scout Ranch, home to the Boy Scouts of America.

Meanwhile, the 416 Fire continues to burn in southwestern Colorado. The blaze has burned over 4,000 acres, putting more than 800 structures at risk, officials said.

Drenching storms completely flooded some roads in the Oklahoma City area on Thursday.

Several inches of rain fell, submerging some cars.

Severe weather moved across the central United States on Sunday, damaging an American Airlines plane and forcing it to make an emergency landing in El Paso, Texas, according to ABC News.

No injuries were reported to the 130 passengers and five crew members on board the flight from San Antonio to Phoenix.

Pictures on social media showed damage to the nose of the plane and a window that was shattered.
