Carthage city employees voice support for administration

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage City Council takes no action to move forward with impeachment proceedings against Mayor Dan Rife and the termination of City Administrator Greg Dagnan.

Tonight’s meeting was the third in eight days since the new council was sworn in.

More than 80 people were in the room.

Following the presentation of a letter signed by 69 city employees in support of Rife and Dagnan — seven city employees spoke, voicing their support for the two men, and asking the council to “find a way forward.”

However, shortly after the public comment period, Councilwoman Tiffany Cossey renewed efforts to impeach the mayor.

That action — as well as the hiring of three separate attorneys to offer an opinion on whether the council can fire Dagnan — was tabled.

Rife has offered to allow Mayor Pro Tem Alan Snow to sign any contracts with a law firm selected to handle the impeachment process. He says it’s an effort to keep things above board.

“Well, the impeachment process will go on and if I’m not satisfied with the end result, then there’s an appeal process, and we’ll continue,” said Maor Rife.

We did ask Cossey for an interview after the meeting. She declined.

Council is expected to take both matters up again at its next meeting — which is next Tuesday, April 23.
