Carson Wentz knocked out of game, Eagles reportedly fear ACL tear

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz looked hurt when he dove against the Los Angeles Rams for a touchdown run, one that was called back due to a penalty. But he stayed in. He even threw a touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery on fourth down at the end of the series.

But Wentz was hurt, and the fear of every Eagles fan was realized when Wentz walked back to the locker room with trainers after the Jeffery touchdown. Even worse, the Eagles almost immediately ruled him out with a left knee injury. Nick Foles came in relief and the Eagles held on to win, 43-35.

ESPN’s Adam Schefer and the Associated Press reported that the team fears Wentz, an MVP candidate, suffered a torn ACL:

However, late on Sunday night, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport offered a glimmer of hope when he reported the initial tests on the ACL don’t definitively show a complete tear.

Wentz was hit often in the first three quarters Sunday. He’s tough and often bounces right back up from hits. The one that knocked him out of the game was not dirty. Wentz went in head-first to try to score. But he was sandwiched by two Rams defenders, including linebacker Mark Barron who hit him hard in the legs. Wentz was down momentarily but got back up (a holding call wiped out the score). There was no sign he’d come out of the game. When he got back to the sideline after the touchdown pass to Jeffery, which gave Philadelphia a 31-28 lead, he went to the medical tent.

Wentz has been amazing this season, leading the Eagles to a 10-2 record heading into Sunday’s game and put himself in the mix for the NFL’s MVP award. He was having an incredible game against the Rams, throwing four touchdown passes, before he left back to the locker room.

The Eagles are on a magical run this season, but the entire picture changes with Wentz’s injury.
