Carrie Underwood makes a triumphant return, but not everyone is happy about it

Carrie Underwood hit the stage at the 53rd Academy of Country Music Awards for an dazzling performance of “Cry Pretty.” It was Underwood’s first public appearance since an accident in November, when she fell down stairs in her home. The singer suffered a broken wrist and damage to her face that reportedly required 40 to 50 stitches.

Underwood has been keeping a low profile since the accident, so it was a welcome surprise when she posted a selfie the day before the ACMs. Some people seemed a bit underwhelmed after all the fuss, though.

Whatever damage the tumble did or didn’t do to her face, one thing is for sure: It didn’t affect her vocal cords. Many people were just glad to hear Underwood sing again.

Before Carrie could even read any of the love or hate on Twitter, she had to return to the stage to accept an award with Keith Urban for Vocal Event of the Year. And it was clear she was overwhelmed by the moment. “Thank you for having me, I’m still kind of, like, shaky right now,” Underwood said, holding back tears. “Thank you guys, thank you country radio, fans, oh my gosh, thank you.”
