Carrie Underwood’s Holiday Plans Include a Lot of Traveling and a Little Decorating: ‘You Have to Have a Tree!’
Country superstar and super mom Carrie Underwood doesn’t slow down for the holidays.
“We will be spending Christmas with Mike’s family in Canada, and then I’ll probably go to Oklahoma to see my family,” she tells PEOPLE in the Holiday Recipes special edition issue, of her seasonal plans with husband and NHL player Mike Fisher, 36, and son Isaiah, 20 months. “Mike’s team is very demanding, and there’s just no time to do both. When he retires, we’ll adjust our scheduling, because we owe my family a lot of Christmases!”
And although she’s constantly on the move, Underwood is adamant that she’ll never be too busy to get back to her roots for the holidays.
“One of the biggest traditions we will always have will be traveling,” she says. “Some of my friends are like, ‘Someday you’re going to want to stay home and have your own thing,’ and I’m like, ‘No. That tradition belongs to our families.’ It’s important for us to get back there.”

The 33 year old, who recently nabbed the Female Vocalist of the Year award at the CMAs, is so booked up that she hasn’t even had time to fully deck the halls of her Nashville house, she says. But there is one Christmas decoration she definitely doesn’t plan to skip.
“By the time I get home , I’m probably not going to bust out everything, but we’ll put up a tree,” she says. “You have to have a tree!”

If you want to get Underwood in the spirit of the season, though, you won’t do so through elaborate light displays and all-tinsel-everything.
“Music is very important,” the “Dirty Laundry” singer says. “Growing up we had a record player, and there was just something about hearing this children’s choir singing ‘Jesus Loves Me’ and ‘Silent Night’ that would always put me in the Christmas spirit. It makes me feel happy.”
