SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — One of the most anticipated moments of the main CNN debate Wednesday was also the biggest applause line of the night as Carly Fiorina firmly but politely responded to Donald Trump’s insulting comments about her looks.
“Look at that face!” Trump was quoted as saying in Rolling Stone in reaction to watching Fiorina on TV. “Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?! I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?”
Trump later amended his comment to deny he was speaking about her. “I’m talking about persona,” he said. “I’m not talking about look.”
Asked about Trump’s comments by CNN debate moderator Jake Tapper, Fiorina cooly replied, “I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.”
“I think she’s got a beautiful face, and I think she’s a beautiful woman!” Trump replied, in a voice that seemed half bellow, half coo.
Trumps’s obvious effort to undo the damage fell flat, as it appeared he was still unable to speak to the lone female Republican presidential primary candidate as an intellectual opponent rather than a physical body.
