Carencro increases police presence after Friday school bus killing

CARENCRO, La. (KLFY) — In the wake of Friday’s killing of Carencro High School student Jaylon Joiner, police have beefed up security in both the schools and the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

Joiner was shot to death as he stepped off a school bus Friday. At least one person has been arrested, and more arrests are expected, authorities said.

Carencro Police Chief David Anderson called the shooting “a very unfortunate incident” for the victim’s family, the community and everyone involved.

“It’s not just one person losing their life, it’s multiple people losing their lives and their freedom,” Anderson said. “At the same time, we still have to worry about the safety of our students and the faculty and staff of our local schools.”

Anderson said he has strengthened police patrols, both inside Carencro High School and Carencro Middle School and out in the community. Anderson said there will be three officers at each school instead of two until further notice, and that bus service to the schools has been interrupted.

According to LPSS, buses that did not run today will not run tomorrow, and a decision on whether or not they will run on Wednesday will be made by noon tomorrow.
