Cardinals place RHP Wainwright on DL

The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Adam Wainwright on the 10-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation, the team announced Sunday.

The move is retroactive to April 20.

Wainwright was scheduled to start Tuesday against the New York Mets. The Cardinals are off on Monday.

Right-handed reliever Jon Brebbia was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to fill the roster spot.

Wainwright underwent elbow surgery in the offseason. Manager Mike Matheny said the pain Wainwright is feeling now is similar to last season's discomfort.

"I think he seems OK with it. He doesn't want it to get to the point where it was before," Matheny told reporters. "What can he do proactively instead of being reactive to having it really flare up?

"He's on a good program to get a little more rest, get a little more treatment with it to get ahead of it and then get back out there and compete. That's the thought right now."

The 36-year-old Wainwright wrote the following on Twitter: "All will be well in a few days."

Wainwright is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA in three starts this season. He defeated the Chicago Cubs in his last outing when he gave up one unearned run and four hits over five innings.

Wainwright has a 147-83 career mark with a 3.29 ERA since reaching the majors with the Cardinals in 2005. The three-time All-Star has won 19 or more games on four occasions.

Brebbia has pitched two scoreless innings in two appearances for the Cardinals this season.
