Cardinals Dolan and O'Malley pray for Notre Dame
As the world watched in horror as Notre Dame Cathedral burned in Paris, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, headed to St. Patrick’s Cathedral to pray for the famous church and those battling to save it.
I just went next door to our own beloved Cathedral, Saint Patrick’s, to ask the intercession of Notre Dame, our Lady, for the Cathedral at the heart of Paris, and of civilization, now in flames! God preserve this splendid house of prayer, and protect those battling the blaze.

Boston’s Cardinal Sean O’Malley also offered his prayers for the first responders attempting to beat back the fire.
Like millions around the world we are watching closely the tragic fire engulfing Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. We pray for first responders & all in the vicinity of this sacred church. We stand close with our friends in the @dioceseparis #NotreDameCathedral

But as the grim images of the famous spire giving way continued to unfold on computer and television screens across the world, it looked for a time as though Paris’s most famous church might not endure.
“Everything is burning. The framing, which dates from the 19th century on one side and the 13th on the other, there will be nothing left,” Andre Finot, a spokesman for Notre Dame, told Agence France-Presse.
Toward the end of the day, however, a bit of good news dawned on a day that had played out for so many Catholics like a nightmare:
