Car stolen from Fort Liberty 30+ years ago recovered in Virginia lake

BRACEY, Va. (WNCN) — A car reported stolen out of Fort Liberty was recovered more than 30 years later from Lake Gaston in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

On Monday morning, divers with the Virginia State Police Search and Rescue team recovered a stolen vehicle from Lake Gaston. Virginia State Police said the vehicle was found near the Steel Bridge Boat Landing, which is just off U.S. 1 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

The vehicle was a 1990 Nissan 240 SX that was reported stolen out of Fort Liberty (then Fort Bragg) on July 4, 1992.

Virginia State Police found the car via side-sonar equipment while the search and rescue team was on a training exercise.
