Car Stolen with Elderly Husky Mix Inside Leaves Memphis Dog Mom Heartbroken

On May 2 there was a car theft at the Fresh Market grocery store in Memphis, Tennessee. The owner left the store and returned to the parking lot to find her car missing and broken glass on the parking lost.

The worst part about this? Her beloved elderly dog named Yoshi was in the stolen vehicle.

I will assume that this owner has her dog with her because as she said above, her dog is elderly and her constant companion. Which sadly doesn't stop people from being absolutely heartless in the comments. One rude person said, "Why do people take their dogs to stores with them just to leave them in the car? That dog would have been perfectly happy at home. She wouldn't have her car but at least she would still have her dog." Another added, "We don’t leave pets in cars!I hope she gets her pup back soon!"

I don't have enough eye rolls in my head for these comments, so thank goodness someone else added, "You’re victim blaming. My dogs love the car. If they weren’t locked in hot, there’s no reason this city shouldn’t be safe enough for her to run an errand. You have no idea what the situation was and you’re suggesting not only the owner but also the dog deserves this? You’re a miserable person." Couldn't have said it better myself.

This is so heartbreaking. You can just tell this owner loves Yoshi so much. She doesn't even care about the car.

How You Can Prevent Dog Theft

Even though so many of our dogs love running errands with us, I guess even leaving a dog in the car with the window cracked for a few short minutes isn't even a good idea. Unless you have another person waiting in the car with them.

We all know not to leave our dogs in cars in the heat, but I suppose even leaving them on a cool day isn't even a good idea.

You can't guarantee your precious fur baby will never be stolen, but there are a few steps you can take to protect yourself and your pet.

Never leave your dog unattended in a car, even with the windows cracked.

Have your dog microchipped. This won't protect your pup from being stolen, but if they are stolen and the thief tries to register them or change the microchip information you will be notified by the company.

Spay or neuter your pet. A lot of times thieves target unaltered pets so they can breeds puppies and then sell these puppies.

Take lots of photos of your pet and of you with your pet. This can be helpful if you have to prove ownership of your pet and to also give to law enforcement.

Vary the routes you take when walking your dog, and try to walk with a buddy when possible.

Don't post public photos of your pets on social media, especially with identifying markers like street signs in the background, the doggy daycare name, where you take them to get groomed or places you visit on a regular basis.

Don't leave your dog or cat outside unattended.

If the worst does happen, alert your local police immediately and tell all of your family, friends and veterinarian.

I hope Yoshi is found safe and sound soon.
