Man crashes car into his pool after his sandal catches on pedal, police say

An 85-year-old California man escaped without injury on Saturday after crashing his car into his own swimming pool, police say.

The man, whose name was not released, told emergency officials in Los Angeles County that his footwear became stuck on one of the vehicle's pedals, causing him to drive through a wall in his garage and into the backyard of his Altadena, California, home.

"He told us that his shoe or sandal got caught in the pedals of the vehicle and (he) drove through the door in the rear part of his garage and into his swimming pool," L.A. County Fire Department Capt. Jeffrey Sims told KCAL-TV.

No one was swimming in the pool at the time, Sims said, and the driver had already climbed out of the pool by the time his department arrived. He declined treatment at the scene.

The white sedan was seen completely submerged in the pool. According to KCAL, the California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

It's not the first time a car has taken a dip in Southern California.

In 2012, a 40-year-old man was arrested after crashing his Lexus through a cinder block wall and into a family's backyard swimming pool in La Puente. In that case, the driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

"We woke up to an awful noise and looked outside, and a car was in the pool," Janelle Diaz, the family's 16-year-old daughter, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. "We had always joked around about it — that someone was going to end up in the pool — because they've hit our wall before."

The same year, a 60-year-old Massachusetts man crashed his RV through a fence and into his neighbor's in-ground swimming pool.

The unidentified driver apparently suffered a health problem shortly before the 28-foot camper flew "through a metal fence, some bushes and logs" and into the pool, according to Boston's Fox 25. Aerial video showed the camper partially submerged in the pool. Neighbors were able to pull the man from the camper before rescue workers arrived. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
