Car damaged in Burlington garage fire

A car was damaged but there were no injuries in a Burlington garage fire yesterday.

The Burlington Fire Department was called to the 1100 block of Spruce Street for a report of smoke coming from a home’s garage with a car inside on Saturday, March 23 at about 4:47 p.m. When they arrived, firefighters found a fully engulfed garage fire with flames encroaching on the nearby home. Firefighters made a quick attack on the fire and extinguished it.

The fire started in the garage where the car was parked, but the cause of the fire is still undetermined. However, the fire is considered accidental and not suspicious. The nearby home had working smoke alarms. The only occupant was outside when the fire department arrived. Damage is estimated at $45,000 including the vehicle, contents and the home. Both the homeowner and renter had insurance.

The Burlington Police Department, West Burlington Fire Department and Alliant Energy assisted the five Burlington firefighters who responded. There were no injuries reported and firefighters cleared the scene at 6:25 p.m.
