2 kids killed, others injured when car crashes through birthday party in Monroe County

Two young siblings were killed and multiple other people injured when a car crashed through a building at a boat club in Monroe County where a birthday party was being held Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
An 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother were pronounced dead at the scene at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, according to the the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
About 15 other people, including adults and children, were injured, Sheriff Troy Goodnough said in a news release late Saturday night. Nine people, three of them children, were transported by ambulance and medical helicopters to local hospitals with serious injuries, the sheriff said. Several others were transported by private citizens for medical treatment, he said.
The driver of the car was a 66-year-old woman who was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing death, Goodnough said. Additional criminal charges against the driver, whose name was not released, will likely be lodged as the investigation continues, he said.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m., the Sheriff's Office said. Goodnough said the vehicle struck the north wall of the facility and came to rest approximately 25 feet inside the building, where a young child's birthdayparty was being held.
Goodnough described the scene as “extremely chaotic, with high levels of emotion by those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident."
