Captain Planet coming to digital download

Planeteer alert! The full six-season run of the environmentally conscious ’90s animated series Captain Planet is being released via digital download for the first time ever next month.

Cartoon Network announced the news Tuesday.

First aired in 1990 as Captain Planet and the Planeteers and later known as The New Adventures of Captain Planet and The All New Adventures of Captain Planet, the earnest toon follows five teenagers who are chosen from across the globe to help defend the planet from eco-villains. They do so with the use of magical rings, the guidance of the Earth spirit Gaia (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg), and the help of the elemental superhero Captain Planet (David Coburn).

The series will be available for purchase April 10 from such digital retailers as iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, Vudu, Playstation Store, and Xbox Store. Individual seasons will retail for $9.99 and $14.99 each, and single episodes will cost $1.99.

Captain Planet can also be seen on CN’s sister network Boomerang, while rumors of a big-screen adaptation seem to resurface every few years.
