Captain Marvel solved the mystery of Nick Fury's eye and teased how Brie Larson's superhero arrives in Avengers: Endgame.

However, it did open up one major question about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No, not how Captain Marvel can use her immense powers to bring back all those dead Avengers. We're talking about the fate of one character in particular.

Seriously guys, where the hell has Goose been since 1995?

As in the comics (where Goose was called Chewie), Captain Marvel revealed that while Goose looks like a cat, she's actually a cat-like alien called a Flerken.

Chewie was first introduced in the 2006 comic Giant-Size Ms Marvel #1 when Carol Danvers (who then went by Ms Marvel) thought her pet was an ordinary cat. It wasn't until Carol met up with the Guardians of the Galaxy that Rocket Raccoon revealed Chewie was really a Flerken.

In the movie, Goose was actually Mar-Vell's pet and after Mar-Vell died in 1989, Goose was left in Project PEGASUS to go about her business until Carol and Nick Fury popped up there in 1995 and Goose snuck aboard their ship.

Goose showed off her Flerken abilities when she unleashed her terrifying tentacles on some unsuspecting Kree warriors, before she swallowed the Tesseract whole and put it in her pocket dimension. As in the comics, Goose is basically a cat-sized TARDIS.

In the second post-credit sequence, we then saw Goose vomit up the Tesseract onto Fury's desk, confirming that Fury kept Goose around despite her being responsible for the loss of his eye. And with Carol off finding a new home for the Skrulls, we can only assume that Goose decided to stick with Fury.

That was in 1995, so it begs the question of where Goose has been since. Surely she could have followed Fury to the Battle of New York and swallowed Loki whole to put an end to the invasion?

She could even have done the same with the pesky Ultron to stop all that mess happening in Sokovia.

The depressing conclusion is that Goose died before the events of Iron Man, hopefully of old age, having led a peaceful and happy life with Fury. The comics never established how long Flerkens live though, so it's unclear if this would have happened. (Goose would be at least six years old at the time of Captain Marvel and almost 20 by the time of Iron Man.)

If that's the case, though, maybe Goose is like Chewie and laid all of her eggs before she died, so we could see Goose Jr in future movies.

Of course, if you want to get serious (and boring) about it, then the real reason we haven't seen Goose in the MCU is obviously that she wouldn't have even been in consideration as a character back when the MCU was launched with Iron Man.

But we'd like to think that Goose left Fury's side because she was off having her own world-saving adventures that will soon be covered in a Goose solo movie in Phase 4.

We can but dream.

Captain Marvel is out now.
