Canucks 3, Devils 2 (OT)
VANCOUVER -- Jason Garrison's goal at 2:18 of overtime gave the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.
The Canucks (3-1) posted their third straight win under new coach John Tortorella. The Devils remained winless in the young season as they fell to 0-1-3.
The loss spoiled New Jersey goaltender Cory Schneider's return to Vancouver for the first time since he was traded to the Devils in the offseason.
The Canucks outshot the Devils 32-23.
Daniel Sedin and Alex Edler tallied for Vancouver in regulation time.
Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias replied for the Devils.
Former Canucks teammates Roberto Luongo, who remained with Vancouver, and Schneider waged a goaltenders' battle in a game that featured just three minor penalties and few scrambles.
Jagr opened the scoring with just under two minutes left in the first period as he finished off a three-way passing play with Patrick Elias and Marek Zidlicky by putting a one-timer past Luongo.
Elias gave the Devils a 2-0 lead at 7:25 of the second period as he put in a shot from a sharp angle off Canucks winger Dale Weise. The Devils caught a break on the play as the puck hit a referee's skate in the corner and it came to Anton Volchenkov, who promptly gave it to Elias.
But Volchenkov was a goat about a minute and a half later as Daniel Sedin's wrist shot from the point hit his skate and eluded Schneider.
Edler tied the game at 2 as he snuck in from his point position, took a back-door pass from Daniel Sedin and deked Schneider before roofing the puck in the net.
In the third period, Luongo foiled Jagr on a wrist from right wing.
Earlier in the day, Cory Schneider said hello to old friends again as he returned to Rogers Arena for the first time since being dealt to the Devils on the day of the 2013 NHL draft.
But Schneider also hoped to use the game as a chance to say goodbye and move on from the organization that developed him into an NHLer.
First though, he had to face more inevitable talk about the trade that changed his career and life. He wound up getting a new jersey after Roberto Luongo was expected to be dealt but stayed.
"It's a little surprising at first," Schneider said after the Devils' morning skate. "It's pretty unexpected. So you don't have any time to prepare for it. We've all been prepared for something for so long, and then it finally happens and we don't know what to do.
"But it sneaks up pretty quickly, I think. There's a part of me that thinks about what could have been, but I think the other half of you gets excited for what's to come ahead."
NOTES: Luongo played his 750th career NHL game. Schneider appeared in his 100th contest in the league. ...
