Canton firefighters battle flames amid partial roof collapse at apartment building
CANTON − Firefighters withdrew from a four-unit apartment building where they were battling a blaze Wednesday afternoon after the building's roof partially collapsed, the city fire department said in a statement.
The department said it's not aware of any injuries by residents at 819 Seventh St. NW. A dog was revived, but a rabbit and several snakes died, officials said Thursday.
Fire and water damage made the building permanently uninhabitable, and it will be torn down. Fire officials estimate the total damage to the home and contents at $41,000.
The occupants had left their homes before firefighters arrived in response to an emergency call made by a neighbor around 2:36 p.m.

The firefighters went into the building to fight the flames before they had to leave due to the partial roof collapse. They then switched to battling from outside the building. They eventually re-entered the structure to put the fire out.
The department asked the local Red Cross to assist occupants of the apartments in getting a place to stay with wind chills in the single digits. It's not yet known how many people have been displaced.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause. The fire department indicated it was still assessing how much damage the blaze caused.
