Canton firefighters save cats with oxygen after fire inside house with 37 felines

CANTON ‒ A firefighter suffered minor injuries while responding to a fire at 622 25th St. NW on Monday afternoon.

The Canton Fire Department said it was called to the two-story home at 2:45 p.m. and reached the scene three minutes later.

"When crews arrived, they found a female outside the home stating there was a fire in her kitchen and that she thinks one of her cats turned on a burner on the stove top," Division Chief Steve Henderson said in a press release. "She also said she tried to put the fire out with a towel but was unable to do so.

"The fire was quickly extinguished by fire crews.

"While extinguishing the fire, crews found 37 cats in the home, several of which were given oxygen for treatment of smoke inhalation. All the cats survived," Henderson said.

The fire was determined to be accidental.

The female occupant was uninjured.

The value of the damage to the structure was estimated at $7,500, and to the contents, $1,500.
