Canisteo man arrested on assault, burglary charges following break-in

CANISTEO, N.Y. (WETM) — A Canisteo man was arrested on Tuesday after police say he broke into someone’s house and assaulted them in the village Monday evening.

According to the Canisteo Village Police Department, 55-year-old Eric D. Hosmer was arrested on Tuesday, April 16, after police said he was responsible for a disturbance Monday evening where a victim had to go to the hospital with several injuries.

Police say that Hosmer entered a home on Monday, April 15, on Maple Street in Canisteo where they assaulted and choked a person. Police say that Hosmer left the scene before they arrived at the home, but found the victim inside with injuries. The victim was taken to the local hospital where police say they’re recovering.

Police searched the area and were able to locate Hosmer on the road near his home Tuesday morning.

Hosmer was charged with assault in the second degree, a felony, burglary in the first degree, a felony, strangulation in the second degree, a felony, and criminal mischief in the third degree, a felony.

Hosmer was arrested and processed at the Canisteo Village Police Department and was taken to the Steuben County Jail to wait for further processing.
