Candidates running for the city of Anderson general election: What you need to know

The City of Anderson will hold an election from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 2.

Four seats are up for election in single-member districts 2, 4, and 6, and one at-large seat is in District 8, with five candidates running.

The filing period for candidates was Jan. 18 through Feb. 1.

A run-off election, if necessary, will be on Tuesday, April 16.

Council members are elected to serve four-year terms. They can be re-elected after every term.

When does early voting start?

Early voting starts on March 18 and continues until March 29.

Where do you vote?

Residents can cast their votes at Anderson City polling locations in their district.

What do I need to know to vote?

To vote, you must have been registered by March 3, 2024.

Candidates who are running

District Two

Incumbent Luis Martinez II is seeking re-election for his second term. He has been on the city council since April 11, 2022.

No one is currently challenging Martinez II for his seat.

District Four

Incumbent Tony Stewart is also seeking re-election for his sixth term. He has served on the city council since July 1, 2000.

His current term began on July 1, 2020. No one is currently challenging Stewart for his position.

District Six

Rick Laughridge currently holds the District Six seat. He has held the position since July 1, 2008, and his current term ends on June 30, 2024.

"I'll be retiring after 16 years on City Council," Laughridge said. "I’m 76 now and would be 80 if I ran this time and won.  Also, my wife is disabled, and I need to take care of her.

"It was a tough decision, but I’m very proud of Anderson and happy that we have excellent young men willing to give up their time for their community."

Bryce Nivens and Greg Steele are running for the vacant seat.

District Eight at Large Seat

Incumbent John Roberts is running for re-election for his fourth term. He has held the position since April 14, 2014.

No one else is currently challenging Roberts for his seat.
