LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Candidates for mayor of the City of Las Vegas will face off Thursday in a debate hosted by KLAS 8 News Now ahead of the 2024 election.

The three front-runners in the race for mayor, former congresswoman Shelley Berkley, City Councilman Cedric Crear, and City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman, will participate in the hour-long debate in the lead-up to the primary election.

The upcoming mayoral term will last four years.

After 25 years, there will be someone other than a Goodman in the office. Incumbent mayor Carolyn Goodman was elected in 2011. She is term-limited from running again. Her husband, Oscar Goodman, served as Las Vegas mayor from 1999 to 2011.

Former Congresswoman Shelley Berkley

Berkley, who was raised in Las Vegas, served the State of Nevada in the United States House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013, holding the position for seven terms. She also served in the Nevada State Assembly from 1982 to 1984. According to Berkley’s website, Berkley was a practicing attorney for the Nevada State Commerce Department, in-house counsel for Southwest Gas Corporation, and Vice President for Government and Legal Affairs for the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.

City Councilman Cedric Crear

Before joining the Las Vegas City Council as the representative from Ward 5 in 2018, Crear was elected to the Board of Regents for the Nevada System of Higher Education in 2006 and reelected in 2012. He was also on the Las Vegas Planning Commission from 2015 to 2018. According to his website, Crear is the only person in Las Vegas history to have served simultaneously as a Higher Education Regent and a Las Vegas Planning Commissioner. Crear grew up in Las Vegas and has previously worked as a marketing director in the casino industry.

City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman

Seaman is currently serving as councilwoman for the Las Vegas City Council representing Ward 2 and previously spent one term and two special sessions in the Nevada State Legislature representing Clark County’s Assembly District 34. Seaman serves on the Debt Committee, Yucca Mountain Nuclear Repository Committee, Southern Nevada Water Authority, Recommending Committee, and serves as Chair of the Audit Committee, according to her website.
