When Do Candidates Choose Their Veeps?
Before 1984, nonincumbent presidential candidates always waited until they arrived at the convention city and secured their nomination before naming their running mate. That tradition was broken by Democrat Walter Mondale in 1984 when he unveiled Rep. Geraldine Ferraro as his choice four days before the convention. The announcement was made in the chambers of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
