New candidate from Baton Rouge announces he’s running for US Congress in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Quentin Anthony Anderson made his official announcement Sunday that he’s running for U.S. Congress for District 6 of Louisiana.

“This campaign is about a new generation of leaders in Louisiana stepping up to answer the call and truly represent the interests of the people,” said Anderson.

He is the son of known advocate and activist Alexis Anderson, and he has a list of what he says needs to be changed for the district and the city of Baton Rouge.

Anderson touched on some areas of concern, including the economic and climate crises of those who live near Cancer Alley, a string of chemical plants from Baton Rouge to New Orleans.

“Folks that live in Cancer Alley are the frontline community getting the business end of the climate crisis,” said Anderson.

He also wants to help the rising number of veterans who end up homeless in Baton Rouge. They make up 6% of the homeless population in the city.

“If you’ve ever served, if you’ve ever worn the uniform of this country, there’s no reason why you should ever find yourself homeless,” said Anderson.

The new congressional map includes a majority Black district that includes other parishes such as West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee.

Anderson is up against other candidates, like Democratic State Sen. Cleo Fields, who announced his candidacy in January. Republican Garret Graves voiced concern about the new map, as he was originally running for Congress for District 6. Federal court hearings in a lawsuit contesting the new map are scheduled for later this spring.

Anderson said District 6 and Baton Rouge need “somebody that will represent the interests of the district will represent the interests of Louisiana, will be a bold champion.” He says he can answer that call.

Primary elections are Tuesday, Nov.5.
