Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland introduced the 2024 federal budget, including funding for Ukraine, as the country plans to increase military spending to 1.76% of GDP by 2030, CP24 reported.

The budget designates $1.6 billion dollars over five years for lethal and non-lethal military aid to Ukraine.

It also includes $350 million over two years to counter large-scale humanitarian crises and $159 million over five years to support Canada's Global Affairs management "transformation".

The budget will include:

  • $48 million over four years and $15.8 million later to forgive preschool educators’ loans

  • $52 million over 5 years to enact and enforce the new Online Harms Act to tackle hate speech

  • $273.6 million over six years for law enforcement, combating radicalization, and victim support

  • $32 million over six years and $11 million a year after for the Security Infrastructure Program, which funds the physical security of community and religious hubs

  • More than 900 million over six years for greener homes and energy efficiency programs

  • $150 million over three years to the Emergency Treatment Fund to help municipalities and Indigenous communities deal with the opioid crisis

  • $6.1 billion over six years and $1.4 billion in the seventh for the Canada Disability Benefit and related costs.
