Campaign to aid drug recovery coming to Portland billboards

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Multnomah County is rolling out its newest campaign to help people get into recovery, something motorists will see on some of the busiest roads in the area.

The county is installing billboards that give resources to recovery support with images to destigmatize addiction. In total, nine major billboards and 34 arterial billboards will be installed across Multnomah County directing people to recovery options.

“The placement was really influenced by data we had about overdose 911 calls so we wanted to make sure that we’re putting them in areas that most needed them and then looked at the billboards to make sure that they reflect the diversity of the people where we’re placing them,” said Multnomah County Health Department Communications and Marketing Manager Diego Basabe.

The campaign includes social media outreach and is the county’s next move in battling the drug crisis. They’re working in partnership with other organizations, including Oregon Recovers.

“We’re grant-funded.  And so our ability to reach folks is limited. And the ability to reach people through billboards is incredible. I think it’s going to really increase our reach,” said Recovery Network Project Director Daniel Mecredy.

The campaign will connect people with an app that Oregon Recovers launched in January to help people navigate their options. The “Recovery is Possible” campaign costs under $100,000 and will run from March 18 to September 1.
