Residents and business owners near Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center in Portage and Trumbull counties might notice an increase in blast noise from the area Wednesday and Thursday while explosives are used during training by the Ohio Army National Guard’s 147th Regiment Regional Training Institute.

The 147th Regiment will be conducting training exercises specifically designed for soldiers taking the combat engineer course. The explosives training simulates realistic battle conditions.

Sounds from the explosions also might be heard farther away than what occurs during normal operations. There will be intermittent explosions and gunfire at the facility during annual training season, which typically runs through September.

Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center is a training site of about 21,000 acres in Portage and Trumbull counties, with various small arms and machine gun weapons ranges that play host to weekend and annual training for Army and other Department of Defense units in the midwest.
