Cambridge Primary School to implement new policy regarding truancy

CAMBRIDGE − Cambridge Primary School is implementing a system that provides more positive, early intervention for truancy.

Families whose children attend the primary school will receive a letter when their students miss five days and again when they miss 10 days of school. After 10 absences, a meeting is scheduled with the parents to assess the situation and identify solutions, Principal April Massey recently told the board of education.

A letter is also sent out after 15 absences. Subsequently, a meeting is scheduled with the Guernsey County Juvenile Court.

Last year, Cambridge Primary School started the Primary Prowlers walking club in which all second-grade students can participate. The Prowlers meet once per week. The members walk for 15 to 20 minutes. To date, 83 students have enrolled in the class.

Middle school Intervention Specialist Mary Rich told board members of her intention to start a Junior National Honor Society at the middle school. The program mirrors the National Honor Society at the high school and is intended to motivate students to do well in the classroom.

The board approved a resolution creating the National Junior Honor Society at the middle school and approved the urgent necessity for the renovation/replacement of a portion of the parking lot at McFarland Stadium.

The May board meeting will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 at the high school.
