GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Lions team officials confirm that Cam Sutton was at the team’s practice in Allen Park when the news broke that an arrest warrant was issued for him in Florida.

Team president Rod Wood, speaking with reporters Monday at the NFL’s annual meetings in Florida, said Wood and other team officials were unaware of the incident until the news broke last week.

“We were learning it the same moment you guys were learning about the warrant,” Wood said. “Actually, I was on a Zoom call with the league on another matter when it popped up on my phone.”

In an interview with Fox 2 Detroit, Wood explained what happened from there.

“He was actually in our building (when the news broke),” Wood told Fox 2. “We found him. He was down with our strength staff. He just kind of showed up, unexpectedly, to work out. We were able to talk to him in person — not me, but other members of the staff — and he left the building.”

He further elaborated: “We suggested that he get counsel and do the right thing to turn himself in. And then after that, we met the rest of the day and then the following morning to decide to release him.”

Wood also noted that no one from the organization has communicated with Sutton since he left the team facility that day.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Sutton’s release includes a June 1 designation, allowing the team to spread the salary cap hit from his contract over two years instead of one.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office issued a warrant on March 20 for one count of domestic battery. The alleged incident happened on March 7 in a Tampa suburb. As of Tuesday morning, Sutton has still not turned himself in to police.

The Detroit Lions have held a “zero-tolerance policy” on domestic violence for several years now. Wood told reporters that was why he was cut before the legal process played out.

“I want to make sure everybody knows, we didn’t release him because of anything related to the cap or money that we may owe him. It was the right thing to do for the organization,” Wood said.
