Caltrans tells drivers to avoid ‘unnecessary holiday travel’ along a portion of Pacific Coast Highway

Complications from a previous mudslide could cause problems for travelers on the holiday weekend, Caltrans warns.

In a post to X, formerly Twitter, Caltrans District 7 sent out a traffic advisory ahead of Monday’s Memorial Day holiday, warning drivers that a mudslide in the Pacific Palisades has left a lane of the Pacific Coast Highway blocked.

The right lane is blocked on the northbound side of PCH at Porto Marina Way just north of Sunset Boulevard, forcing drivers to merge into one lane. The merge could create backed-up traffic in the area, which is typically very busy.

The slide occurred in mid-February, the agency said, and they’ve since secured emergency funding to create an extra northbound lane. A construction date hasn’t been set, but a contractor is expected to be hired next week.

“The slide is too unstable to clear from the base,” Caltrans Distrcit 7 said on X. “All lanes will be shifted towards the southbound highway shoulder to create room for the second northbound lane.”

Caltrans referred to the affected area as “Tramonto Slide,” and said it’s been subject to disruptive slides for years.
