CalOES urges residents to stay out of water as weather heats up

(FOX40.COM) — The California Office of Emergency Services is urging residents to take precautions as they look to cool off in the state’s lakes and rivers.

Waterways take on extra water from melting snow, getting faster, deeper and better able to conceal debris.

Even though temperatures are expected to reach into the 90s this weekend in the Sacramento area, melting snow can also make the waterways they feed into extremely cold.

CalOES says the temperatures make the water “dangerous to swim in, even for the most experienced swimmers” as it may incapacitate in minutes.

The agency recommends staying out of the water all together but for those near swift water it offers the following advice:

  • Never swim alone. Always bring a friend or someone who can call for help if needed.

  • Don’t jump in after someone who has fallen in.

  • Always wear a life jacket.
