Whether you got into chess because of Bobby Fischer or “The Queen’s Gambit,” the Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Chess Club’s tournament next weekend will test your strategy skills.

The club is hosting the Quad Cities March Madness Open 2024 chess tournament on Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at WIU-QC Riverfront Hall, 3300 River Drive in Moline, rooms 103/104. The tournament is an Iowa Mini-Grand Prix qualifier. It includes WIU-QC students and members of the WIU Leathernecks Chess Club Moline and the Illowa Chess Club from the Quad Cities. It will assess students’ strategy skills while networking with other players.

Registration is required to participate and can be completed the day of the tournament from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Click here to register online. All participants must bring sets and clocks. The USCF-Rated Open Section requires both USCF and IASCA membership while the USCF-Rated Reserve competition requires USCF membership only.

The tournament schedule includes:

USCF-Rated Open Section (Iowa Mini Qualifier): 10 a.m. start, 1:15 p.m. start, 3:45 p.m. start and 6 p.m. start.
USCF-Rated Reserve (Under 1400): 10 a.m. start, 1:15 p.m. start, 3:45 p.m. start and 6 p.m. start.
Unrated Beginner Kids Section (four rounds): 10 a.m. start.
