On The Call: Time Warner chief discusses making HBO available as Internet-only service

Time Warner Inc. has offered Internet-only subscriptions to HBO in Scandinavia. During a conference call with analysts on Wednesday about first-quarter earnings, CEO Jeff Bewkes was asked about bringing that to the U.S.

"We have the rights to do it, and we would do it if we thought it was in our economic best interests. At this point, we don't think it makes sense. We don't think the target market is sufficiently large to be attractive at this point. So what we are doing — and this is working pretty well — is we are working with the MVPDs (cable and satellite distributors) to increase the penetration of HBO in a mutually beneficial way. We are always going to keep evaluating it, depending on the country."
