California police officer remains in critical condition after gunfight that injured 3

May 3 (UPI) -- Two police officers and an armed suspect were hospitalized Thursday night after a shootout in San Jose, Calif.

San Jose police said two officers were investigating a disturbance near the Bernal Plaza shopping center at San Ignacio Avenue and Bernal Road when they "made contact" with an armed man who fired on them.

The two officers returned fire, shooting the suspect before he was taken into custody, according to police.

Both officers were shot during the exchange and were taken to a local hospital, along with the suspect.

As of Friday morning, one officer was released after being treated for minor injuries. The other officer and the suspect both had life-threatening injuries and remain in critical condition.

San Jose police said they are investigating the shooting.

San Ignacio Avenue was closed from Bernal Road to Great Oaks Boulevard. Bernal was closed from Monterey Road to San Ignacio. The public was advised to avoid the area.
