California governor identifies fallen BART officer

DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown identifies the Bay Area Rapid Transit officer accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer as a 20-year veteran of the department.

Brown says in a statement received early Wednesday that 42-year-old BART Sgt. Tom Smith of San Ramon is the officer who was shot Tuesday afternoon. Smith was taken to a hospital where he died.

Brown says Smith, a detective, is survived by his wife and 6-year-old daughter.

Smith is the department's first on-duty fatality in its 42-year history.

Officers were conducting a probation search at an apartment in the East Bay city of Dublin regarding several robberies on BART property. The suspect wasn't home at the time.

He says flags at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in honor of Smith.
