Calf Fry organizers emphasize no drinking and driving

STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — One of the biggest weekends in Stillwater kicks off tonight, with the three day Calf Fry event in full swing at the Tumbleweed Dance Hall.

It is filled with music, alcohol and fun. While having a good time may be the main priority for people at Calf Fry, making sure everyone drinks responsibly and safely gets home is most important.

“We want to welcome you to Stillwater, but we want you to know that we need you to be safe,” Will Joyce, Mayor of Stillwater said. “Please don’t drink and drive.”

An event like no other, America’s largest Calf Fry, bringing in people from across the US to enjoy some red dirt music.

With so many people coming into town and with the expectation of many people drinking, the city and event organizers have continued to come up with ways to make Calf Fry a safer environment, with ride options for those who are drinking.

“I can’t say enough about safety,” Cary McBride, Co-owner of Tumbleweed Dance Hall said. “So, we’ve added the buses. The buses will bring you from the strip, downtown Stillwater all the way here and back.”

“We reached out to Uber, reached out to Lyft, to let them know like, hey, you guys are needed for this event,” McBride said. “So, their presence is much more than it ever has been.”

A former OSU student is even taking it into her own hands to help keep people safe.

“I’ll do it for free, but I offered rides because Calf Fry is a really big weekend for Stillwater,” Allyson Blosser said.

She is offering rides to and from Calf Fry for free to help stop people from getting behind the wheel after drinking.

“I come from a small town; I’m from Woodward, Oklahoma,” Blosser said. “Our community has been affected by a lot of drunk driving situations. With that kind of fresh and heavy on my heart, I just felt like I could do that for the Stillwater community and keep some kids safe while they have fun.”

Mayor Joyce says they will have extra patrol out this weekend along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol stepping in to help.

“If you’re going to go out to concerts and you’re going to enjoy some beer or whatever out there, that’s great,” Mayor Joyce said. “Have a ride, get a ride home. Tons of options in our community for folks to get rides.”

Calf Fry started Thursday and will be going on Friday and Saturday as well. Allyson says if anyone needs a ride to or from Calf Fry, to reach out to her on Facebook.
