CAL FIRE makes arson arrest near Paradise

(FOX40.COM) — A man was arrested near the Butte County community of Paradise on Wednesday for allegedly starting a wildland fire, according to the CAL FIRE Butte Unit.

A CAL FIRE captain was flagged down by residents and informed the captain that they had extinguished a small fire on the roadside and saw a person walking away from the area.

Around a half mile away, a man was detained by deputies with the Butte County Sheriff’s while they waited for CAL FIRE Law Enforcement officers to arrive.

The man was arrested following an interview and investigation of the scene. He is facing a charge of arson of wildland and was booked into the Butte County Jail with a bail set at $75,000.

“Although this fire was contained to a small spot of vegetation, it serves as a reminder that fire season is approaching,” CAL FIRE Butte wrote in a news release.

Since 2020, CAL FIRE’s law enforcement officers have made over 100 arson arrests per year. In 2023, CAL FIRE recorded 111 arson arrests.
