Cal Fire issues update on Otay Mesa battery storage site fire

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — After a fire at a battery storage site in Otay Mesa caused flare-ups over the weekend, authorities issued a positive update Tuesday morning.

The fire started last Wednesday, May 15 around 3:45 p.m. at the Gateway Storage Energy facility, Cal Fire said. Crews reported major damage to the roof of the 16,000-square-foot building.

Cal Fire said, as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, there was currently no visible smoke or active fire at the scene. However, firefighters remain on standby to monitor air quality and water runoff. They will stay on site until it is confirmed there is no longer a threat to public safety, Cal Fire said.

A road closure is currently in place near Camino de la Fuente at Paseo de la Fuente.
