WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4) — This summer, Grammy Award-winning rock band Cage The Elephant will be taking the stage throughout the U.S. on a massive 45-date tour. The tour will begin with a show at the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre in West Valley City, on June 20.

The presale starts today, March 5, with a general sale beginning Friday, March 8. Special guests Young the Giant and Bakar will be joining them on a majority of the dates, including in Utah.

At the same time they announced the tour, the Kentucky-based group also shared details about the release of their sixth full-length album Neon Pill, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Social Cues, which took home a Grammy for “Best Rock Album.”

Neon Pill is set to come out May 17, about one month before the tour starts. The band has already given fans a taste of its sound with two singles, including the title track which came out in January. A second single, “Out Loud”, was released last week and is described as the emotional centerpiece of the album.

The album comes at a difficult crossroads for some of the band members. Early in the pandemic, brothers Matthew Shultz [vocals] and Brad Shultz [guitar] lost their father. The new album and song take much inspiration from the challenges they have faced in the aftermath.

“‘Out Loud’ is very connected to my father,” stated Matthew Shultz in a press release. “My dad’s the reason we discovered music in the first place. When he died, ‘Out Loud’ just poured out of me. My efforts towards the song were deeply rooted in paying honor to him, and I knew it meant a lot to Brad too.”

Neon Pill is also shaped by the band dealing with multiple deaths of friends and other personal trials. In the album, the band is expected to be exploring new musical ground, while also still maintaining their classic Cage The Elephant sound and creativity.

“To me, Neon Pill is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way,” said Matthew Shultz. “Everything is undoubtedly expressed through having settled into finding our own voice. We’ve always drawn inspiration from artists we love, and at times we’ve even emulated some of them to a certain degree. With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves. We weren’t reaching for much outside of the pure experience of self-expression, and simultaneously not necessarily settling either. We just found a uniqueness in simply existing.”

The new album Neon Pill can be pre-ordered online.
