BYU fires offensive coordinator Ty Detmer
After a tough season, BYU coach Kalani Sitake is making changes to his staff.
Sitake announced Monday that he has relieved offensive coordinator Ty Detmer of his duties. Detmer, who won the Heisman Trophy as BYU’s quarterback in 1990, served as the OC on Sitake’s staff for the past two seasons.

In a press release, BYU said it will “immediately begin a search for a new offensive coordinator.” Whoever is hired as the new OC will then “make decisions regarding the offensive staff,” the school said.
After being brought in to replace Bronco Mendenhall (who left for Virginia) Sitake hired Detmer in December 2015. Detmer previously spent six seasons as the head coach at St. Andrew’s Episcopal, a high school in Austin, Texas. Detmer is a BYU legend. A two-time All-American, Detmer threw for 15,031 yards, fifth-most in FBS history, before his 14-year NFL career.
BYU went 9-4 in 2016 but had a big drop-off in 2017, finishing 4-9. The Cougars were No. 118 nationally in total offense (325.2 ypg) and No. 123 nationally in scoring offense (17.1 ppg).
