Buzz Williams implores VT students to 'quit cussin' over dubious Grayson Allen call

Virginia Tech delivered a signature win on the season Monday night, rallying from 15 down at home to top No. 5 Duke in a 64-63 thriller.

But Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams may have delivered the moment of the game when a raucous student section reacted to a sketchy Grayson Allen moment as raucous student sections tend to do.

Here’s the setup.

Virginia Tech, firmly on the NCAA Tournament bubble and in desperate need of a resume win, had the prefect opportunity with a home tilt against Duke. But the Blue Devils surged out to an early 29-14 lead to take the wind out of the sails of Cassell Coliseum.

But as the second half wound down, the Hokies were rallying and had cut Duke’s lead to 60-54 with 3:03 remaining. Duke had the ball, and Allen heaved a no-chance shot at the basket, flailed like Allen does and drew a questionable foul on Virginia Tech’s Justin Robinson.

Needless to say, the home crowd was not pleased and let the officials know with one of basketball’s most time-honored mildly profane chants.

Then this happened.

That is quality work from Williams. Not only does the Virginia Tech coach deliver a folksy decorum lesson to the young Hokies supporters, he preempts any technical fouls that may have been called for an overzealous fan who might have otherwise decided to throw something on the court.

And it may have made a difference, as Virginia Tech didn’t have a point to spare in a big one-point win that has them pointed in the right direction with March approaching.
