Buying something at DC Harris Teeter stores? Shoppers now required to prove it before leaving

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Shoppers at Harris Teeter stores around the District now have to showing a receipt for their items before exiting.

The new policy went into effect Wednesday, along with a ban on large bags including back packs, to prevent shoplifting.

“I was here earlier this morning to get something, and as I was walking down the aisle, I seen somebody has drank or drank and just put it on the shelf,” said Joy Plater, a customer at the Harris Teeter in Navy Yard.

Harris Teeter justified its decision in an email to DC News Now.

“When theft occurs, it impacts everyone. We absorb the losses, which can ultimately lead to increased prices,” Harris Teeter stated.

The company also said taking these steps will help keep the doors open in its D.C. locations.

“A single policy is not going to stop people from shoplifting,” said Langston McKee, another Navy Yard customer.

Harris Teeter is just the latest grocery chain around the District to implement a receipt policy, as Safeway launched its program back in February which included security gates to stop thieves.

The company said the new policies could expand to other stores around the DMV if they have problems with shoplifting.
